Talent Story – Niklas Eriksson, Senior Consultant
Talented specializes in helping developers find the best IT jobs and projects. Here Niklas Eriksson, a Software Developer who was hoping to land a job that would get him working with JavaScript, shares his experience with Talented.
Who is Niklas?
I’m Niklas, a 33-year-old nerd living in the vicinity of Turku. I got interested in coding in the 90’s by reading source code in a magazine and coding text adventure games in BASIC. Since then I’ve never seriously thought about doing anything else (professionally).
What hardware do you use?
MacBook Pro 15”.
And what software?
Visual Studio for Unity development and JetBrains IDE’s for almost everything else.
What would be your dream setup?
An IDE that understands my thoughts and writes robust code for me.
What is your favorite programming language and why?
This is a hard one. I am currently working with JavaScript and I do enjoy it. I am also very interested in functional programming and have started learning Clojure in my free time.
In the beginning, did you have any preconceptions about us or recruiting companies in general?
I had been contacted by multiple headhunters before I heard about Talented. From the first contact, I realized that Talented wasn’t a typical recruiting company. Talented serves applicants, not only companies.
When we first met you got to tell us about your preferences for jobs and companies, so has your new job matched with your expectations?
I was hoping to land a job that gets me working with Javascript (React etc.) and spent my free time sharpening my skills on the subject. Time well spent I’d say! I now work at Houston Inc. that is an agile software company with around eighty skilled and easygoing Houstonians. I knew I was in the right place after my pair programming interview with a developer from Houston. It was a very pleasant experience and didn’t feel like an interrogation.
Houston has an employee first mentality that makes working there feel safe. Houston is also stripped of any hierarchy and bureaucracy, so it might not be the best fit for someone who values them.
How do you think we did?
I was contacted by Teemu in February asking if I would be interested in having a chat with someone from Houston. After that, it didn’t take long for me to have a contract to sign. All in all, you did great!
How would you describe Talented to a friend or anyone who is looking for new challenges?
If you’d like to get opportunities slammed in front of you without doing a thing, I can’t think of anything more sensible than joining Talented!
